Connecting to Our Body

When most people think of spiritual wellness, they focus on their beliefs, morals, and principles. For me, that system of thought is how I connect and define my relationship with God. When I think of wellness, I think of my physical body and how I maintain health. Spiritual wellness for me is how I connect with my body. That is correct, I said how I connect with my body. I spent years disconnected from my body. When I was younger, I had severe body issues and just plain self-image issues. As I got older, I became more comfortable with my body, but again the idea of wellness was not one I fully embraced.

It took me a long time to realize that what most people think of as wellness is more like ‘I feel okay’ or ‘I’m not feeling sick.’ To me, that is not wellness -that is getting by.

Wellness is when you are focusing on your body and the systems of your body and ensuring that they are working optimally.”

Are you in pain? If the answer is yes, then your body’s ‘Check Engine Light’ is on, and it is sending you a signal that something is about to fall apart. Are you gaining or losing weight uncontrollably? Then something is not connecting with your digestive and hormonal systems? The list goes on and on of how many things are not ‘well’ within our body, yet we say that we are doing well. Wellness for me is when I wake up energized, pain-free, and feel connected to my body. When I have created this within myself, that to me is spiritual wellness.

Yes, I have a healthy diet and exercise program. However, to achieve complete spiritual wellness within myself, I also have to do the things that bring my heart joy. For example, going on long walks with my dog and listening to an audiobook makes me work out longer, feel relaxed, and increase my energy. Going to the gym and lifting weights for 45 minutes makes me feel stressed out, and I don’t enjoy it. I had to find the things that allowed my body to create and maintain wellness and brought joy to my heart. So there you have it. My goal for spiritual wellness is to find the things that create and maintain wellness in my body and bring joy to my heart, mind, and soul.
