The Benjamin Franklin Mindset

When I was younger, one of my favorite book characters was Scarlett O’Hara from ‘Gone With The Wind.’ I used to use what some may consider the ‘Scarlett O’Hara’ mentality – ‘I will think of it tomorrow’ or ‘tomorrow is another day. This mentality worked great with chores around the house and schoolwork till I got to high school, college, and especially chiropractic college. I realized, after numerous stressful episodes of all night studying, completing projects, and essay writing, that waiting till the last possible minute or just another day is stressful and actually causes more work.

Now I have more of the Benjamin Franklin mindset – ‘Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.’ Why do I bring this up in a newsletter about health, you might ask? The reason is as a chiropractor, I constantly come into contact with people that wait till they are in the worst possible pain to come in (hence the Scarlett O’Hara mindset). Prior to getting to the point where they can barely stand up, they were experiencing soreness, difficulty moving, pain with bending, and more! They thought, ‘it’s no big deal, and if it’s worse tomorrow, then I will get it checked out. When it comes to cancer, early prevention is essential. Things like breast self-exams and routine check-ups are crucial. These are not the things you want to put off because waiting can have detrimental consequences. The earlier you have pain, the easier it is to manage the cause. The same thing with cancer, the earlier you know what is going on with your body, the more options that may be available to you.

Therefore, I will leave you with this action – think like Benjamin Franklin when it comes to your health. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort, don’t wait until you can barely walk to go to your local chiropractor, acupuncturist, physical therapist, reflexologist, massage therapist, or other practitioners – take care of your pain as soon as it starts. If you are in a risk factor for cancer or just to be conscientious of your health – don’t put off taking care of your body. Take care of your body today. Remember – your body is the only body you have, and it cannot be replaced.
